I was happy with device until I plugged it in to get my "guaranteed latest map update". The update ran from nearly an hour when I got the out of space error that others have described. Frustrated, I packed it up immediately and sent it back to Amazon the next day. I see where others have found a work around with assistance from TomTom support. I prefer that mine work correctly right of the box. Good luck with yours.

I can highly recommend this GPS to anyone who wants the best at a reasonable price. I would easily buy this over the Garmin 255W again.
The 340S has a wealth of customizable features and is easy to use. The fact that I can change road names and note blocked streets is worth the price of the unit alone! Map share is another great feature. I am on the road 8-10 hours per day in the same community.
I do think that a few features need to be added or changed, this also goes for the competitors as well since these drawbacks seem to be in countless GPS's now. 1) KILL the auto zoom! 2) Show more street names on the screen! 3) Let me add a road, at least to my GPS if you don't want me to share it.
Some people say that the "auto zoom in" feature is good but I say that intersections are where most accidents happen! Look for other cars and drive through the intersection with your eyes looking out the window where they need to be looking! There are plenty of arrows that tell us which way to turn and a voice that tells us which street to turn onto without looking at a zoomed in view.
I want to see street names on my GPS like it's a map. I use the GPS on trips once in a while but it is on every time I drive. I want to know what streets and parks are around me when I am just driving. Police and firemen for example want to know what streets are around them too at all times. Give us the option to display fewer street names on a trip but let us see them otherwise.
Now this is specific to TomTom since the competitors lack this feature TOTALLY! Let me add a road to at least my map. That way at least I can use a road that has been there for years or a highway that just opened up. Make this feature a map share if it is added by a large group. I already said I wanted map share so why not risk road additions too if I agree to it?
One BEWARE note now. BACKUP your 340S with your computer software BEFORE you use any TomTom software or connect to TomTom home! 2 Gigs is not enough memory for this device. As cheap as memory is now the device should have 3-4 Gigs. You will need to delete items on the 340S before you can upload safely other things. TomTom home does a good job of helping you pick features to delete like Spanish and French voices that you'll never use. I wish I could store the Mexican and Canadian maps on my PC until I need them too so I could free up more space. I had to reinstall ALL the data to my 340S because while I was doing a (free) map update that took several hours to perform, a storm came through in the last 2-3 minutes before the update finished, knocked out the power and the GPS failed to find the new map! The sky was clear when I started but map updates take hours! 3 more minutes and I would have been finished. BEWARE - backup data first with computer software!
Of course a power hit can happen on any GPS but map share data belongs to TomTom and is why I chose it over a Garmin 255W.

When reviewing a GPS receiver I try to be objective. I own/have owned so many different units from several manufacturers that it's easy to forget that not everyone wants or needs the same thing in a GPS. That being said, although the TomTom has some unique features, I can't recommend it compared to other GPS receivers in it's price category. Here is why:
First the positive:
* The display, in both size and clarity is excellent. I had no problem seeing it in direct sunlight as I have with other units.
* The "Advanced Lane Guidance" (a feature that can be found on other units) is really nice, when available. Don't count on it in lesser traveled areas.
* The built-in suction cup mount arm keeps the unit compact and ready to go in a minute. For someone who travels often it seems like a great feature. You can have it in your briefcase, pull it out and have it one the window, ready to go without looking fore extra pieces (more on this later).
Now for the negatives:
* Although the TomTom suction cup worked better than most, the mount ring does not hold the unit securely. It popped off both when I touched the XL340 and then on it's own. For me this is a huge design error.
* I feel that the start up menu (the unit's "Home Page") was not nearly as simple and easy to use as it should be for an entry level GPS. It is my opinion that Garmin does a far better job of making the GPS receivers user-friendly. To test this (and to make sure that I was too biased) I loaned my TomTom XL 340 to a friend who had very limited experience with GPSs. After a week she told me that she hated it. It fell off too often and was not at all intuitive to use. I have given several Garmin nuvi's as gifts and had never had these complaints.
* The instruction book looks as though it was designed for those who cannot read. At only 20 pages it was far too simple to be of much use.
All in all I like the TomTom O-K and if I had to use it as my primary GPS I could get used to some of it's quirks. Still, for a first-time GPS owner I think that there are better units on the market at this price point. I give it 3.5 stars (since Amazon does not have fractional stars I am rating it offically at 4 stars).

So far it seems to be helpful. It does have a small learning curve. Not the most user friendly GPS I've owned, but I like it so far.
